ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS:
– Buttery Belly & Flutters and Beneficial Breathwork
Get tuned into your tummy and develop abdominal isolations like.the belly roll, and the ever elusive “flutter”. Learn the anatomy and technique of fluttering. We will go over breathing and abdominal exercises/techniques to help develop and strengthen abdominal movements in your dance. Knee pads or Yoga mat recommended.
“Dont forget to breathe” is something we often hear before we begin a performance or task, and yet somehow its still really easy to forget.
Being aware and in control of our breathing is a very powerful way we can improve our dancing and even our day to day lives. In this workshop we will work on techniques to improve our awareness of our breathing while we dance and work towards being more conscious and in control of it. We will have fun too, but don’t hold your breath;)

– Introduction to Caribbean Fusion
An introduction to the music, and movements of Caribbean dance (Dancehall, soca, reggae, reggaeton etc) and the technique behind the movements. A look at music choices and movements that work for a fusion with belly dance.

– Improving Improvisation
This workshop covers various exercises and techniques to help build confidence and skills for improvising. Improvising can be intimidating and we can find ourselves stressing about repeating the same movements and overthinking instead of enjoying the music and simply being present with it. This workshop is designed to help get past these mental blocks and work through our concerns and transform that anxious energy into energy we can utilize in our dance.

– Shimmy While you Twerk’n’ Bubble
Shimmies, more shimmies, and spicy derriere movements to add some “cheek” to your dancing.
We will look at shimmy layers,
as well the mechanics of what has come to be known as “twerking” and “bubbling” and ways in which we can use the musculature of these movements to strengthen our dance technique while having fun. Don’t let the word “twerking” cause you to feel shy, these movements are very beneficial to strengthening our lower abdominals and expanding our range of motion.

– Mint Conditioning – Dance Conditioning
In this workshop we go over exercises and stretches
to condition ourselves to move more freely while dancing and improve our balance and stamina. It includes breaking down movements in various postures to feel the difference and understand how movements are generated and memorizing the feeling in our bodies. We will also do some shimmy drills and some work in demi pointe to build our ankle strength and balance.

– Tune In To Technique, Hipwork and Omis
An in depth look at movement and mechanics as well as the musicality to make them shine. Technique break down, conditionin(g, and strengthening. Layering, level changes, travelling steps, flourishes, accents, range of motion, nuances, expression and more can be focused on. Executing movements with strength/power, or softness/grace.

– Drum Solo Choreography
An overview and breakdown of techniques. Special attention will be given to creating power and fluidity in movements while keeping them clean and sharp, as well as having fun with the drum solo.

ABOUT CASSANDRA FOX
Cassandra Fox is a well-established dance artist specializing in Raqs Sharqi (aka Belly Dance) and Caribbean Fusion. Her dancing has been largely influenced and inspired by her Jamaican heritage.
She began dancing in 2008 while studying Nutritional & Nutraceutical Sciences at the University of Guelph.
While she initially began dancing on a whim for fun, it quickly evolved into a deep passion for dance and teaching.
Cassandra became particularly interested in the mechanics of the movements and how to break them down in various ways and increase understanding of ways that our bodies can move.
At the same time, she understands the roots in social dances and that fun and connection should be at the core of classes and performances.
She approaches her performances and her teaching with enthusiasm, a sense of playfulness, and genuine interest behind the science of a movement. She is committed to helping students feel more connected to themselves and their movements and encouraging individual expression.
Cassandra has been fortunate to establish and maintain large followings on social media with almost 4 million followers across Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
These platforms have blessed her with opportunities to teach and perform around the world, as well as locally having established and maintained a show at a family restaurant , Tholos, for over 14 years.
Her experience as a performer, her visibility online, as well as her educational background in Nutritional Sciences has also given her a lot of insight and understanding into body image discussions, especially within the lenses of performances art.
Cassandra is also an enthusiastic sewist and fabric collector. She makes her own dance costumes as well as clothes for herself and family. She resides in the forest with her husband, son, and three cats .
