Lindy Hop.
The Lindy Hop is an American dance which was born in the African-American communities in Harlem, New York City, in 1928 and has evolved greatly since then. it was a fusion of many dances that were prevalent at the time, but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway, and Charleston. It is a member of the swing dance family.
Lindy Hop is an energetic dance, using both 6 and eight counts. There is both partnered and solo dancing. The contact in the partnered dance is mainly by light hand-to-hand contact, with hand-to-hip, and hand-to-shoulder variations, much different to the close body contact style typical of Salsa or Tango.
Lindy Hop today is danced as a social dance, as a competitive dance, as a performance dance, and in classes, workshops, and camps. Partners may dance alone or together, improvisation being given a central part as a channel for individual expression.
